The claim the Pau d'arco can "cure" cancer has not been substantiated, (although there are some herbalists that recommend pau d'arco to strengthen your immunity in the presence of ailments such as Cancer, HIV, AIDS, chronic bronchitis, and chronic fatigue syndrome). However there are very positive scientific findings in Pau D'arco's strength in fighting yeast, fungi and bacterial infection.

Researchers and scientists have found in the inner bark of the trees a handful of powerful infection fighting compounds called "naphthoquinones". Naphthoquinones appear to help kill certain disease causing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The name given to this herbal remedy by the Guarani and Tupi tribes in South America is "tajy", meaning to have strength and vigor.

Laboratory studies have also demonstrated that Pau d'arco has anti-fungal properities eqaling those of a common anti-fungal prescription drug named ketoconazole. This property likely explains its effectiveness for vaginal yeast infections caused by the yeast Candida, as well as fighting those fungi responsible for jock itch, athlete's foot, and other fungal skin infections.
