Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) - The most common of prostate conditions among men. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. Facts show over 50% of men age 60 and 80% of men age 80 are estimated to suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia. This enlargement will often squeeze the urethra where it runs through the prostate. BPH symptoms include difficulty urinating, a weak urine stream, and waking several times a night to urinate. Older men are more likely to suffer from BPH because as a man ages his prostate naturally enlarges.
Prostatitis - An inflammation of the prostate. Prostatitis is not contagious and modern medicine does not yet clearly understand the way in which the prostate becomes infected. The bacteria that cause prostatitis may get into the prostate from the urethra by backward flow of infected urine. Non-infectious prostatitis is not treatable with antibiotics. It is shown that muscle relaxers, sitz baths, prostatic massage and other treatments may offer some relief of symptoms.
Prostate Cancer - A common and serious health concern. According to the American Cancer Society, 220,900 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that usually begins in the outer portion of the prostate. As this tumor grows, it can spread to the inner portion of the prostate. Treatment options for prostate cancer hormone therapy, radiation, brachytherapy and/or surgery. There are two tests, the digital rectal exam (DRE) and the prostate-specific antigen test (PSA test), critical to detecting men at higher risk of prostate cancer and other prostate diseases. High PSA can indicate a greater chance of developing prostate cancer. However, many men with BPH also have elevated PSA levels, so a high PSA does not necessarily mean cancer is present.
Impotence - Erectile dysfunction. The inability to achieve penile erection or to maintain an erection until
ejaculation.
Urinary Incontinence - Loss of bladder control. Symptoms range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting.
Prostatism - Used to define any condition of the prostate that causes interference with the flow of urine from the bladder, or symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate gland.
